Two travelers walked home heavy with grief, certain that hope had died, and a stranger fell into step beside them. They did not recognize him. It was Jesus the whole way. This piece holds that road, the long light of evening, the company we do not always know we have. When you feel most alone, that is often exactly when he is closest, walking beside you in a form you have not yet recognized. This is a reminder that he has not left the road, even on the days you cannot see his face.

The story behind the piece

This piece is built around the light of evening. Mark and our in-house artists studied the long golden light of late afternoon over the hills outside Jerusalem, the dust of the road to Emmaus, the season and terrain those travelers would have walked, so the journey would feel real and weary and true. We researched the geography and the distance, but the heart of the work was prayer, asking how to paint a presence walking beside grief unrecognized. Every pass reached for that quiet companionship. The intention was to bring the nearness of Christ into your home, a reminder that he walks beside you even when you cannot yet see his face.
